Hlavne Square

Stately buildings, statues and a popular Christmas market are the top draws of this beautiful plaza in Bratislava’s old town.

Hlavne Square enjoys a fabulous location in the old town, just a few paces from the Danube River, Bratislava Castle and other landmark sites. It is a good starting point from which to explore Slovakia’s exciting capital, but before you do, take in the square’s numerous attractions.

Look around the square to appreciate the attractive and ornate façades of some of the old buildings, including the Paluďaiov Palace and the Palace of the Hungarian Exchange Bank.

Stop by the Old Town Hall, which dates back to the 13th century. Inside is a branch of the Bratislava City Museum. View exhibits that cover events from the Neolithic era through to the present day. Then climb the stone tower for views of the old town. Go next door to the Apponyi House to learn about the history of winemaking in and around Bratislava.

Walk to the middle of the square to look over Maximilian’s Fountain, also known as the Roland Fountain. The 16th-century water feature is crowned by a statue of Maximilian II, ruler of the Holy Roman Empire. According to legend, the figure moves at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

See other sculptures dotted around the square, including a woman pouring water from a jug. In front of the French Embassy is a life-size bronze figure of one of Napoleon’s soldiers leaning on a bench.

The square hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including comedy performances, classical music concerts and food festivals. The biggest draw is the Christmas market. Visit in late November or December when the square is filled with stalls selling handcrafted goods, ceramics, wood carvings and lots of gift ideas. As you browse, sip on fruit punch and honey wine.

Hlavne Square is in the center of Bratislava’s old town and is well served by public transportation. Car parking is tricky in the area, with few spaces. However, there is parking available, for a fee, in garages near some of the big hotels. Return to the square at night for a drink in a café and to see it lit up.
