Art lovers will enjoy one of the world’s best collections of Chinese antiquities, art and other treasures, as well as works by contemporary local artists.

Established in 1962, Hong Kong Museum of Art is Hong Kong’s premier art museum. It holds more than 15,000 artworks, ranging from historical paintings and ancient scrolls to more contemporary works. Learn all about the history of this fascinating Special Administrative Region of China, and explore the work of local artists through temporary exhibitions. The museum is situated close to the Star Ferry port, overlooking the harbor in Tsim Sha Tsui, making it convenient to stop by, whether for a quick visit, or to spend a few hours browsing the exhibits on a rainy day. Art objects in the museum date from the 16th century to the present day. One of the highlights is the Xubaizhai Gallery, which tells the story of life in the Ming and Qing dynasties through extraordinary landscape paintings and scrolls. Many of the artworks and antiquities are shown on a rotating basis and so locals return time and again to see what’s on display, and visitors are always in for an unexpected treat. The exhibitions in the museum are mainly of paintings, calligraphy and sculpture from Hong Kong and China. Depending on the current rotation, you can also admire ceramics, wall hangings, bamboo carvings and bronze and jade pieces. In the temporary displays the museum puts the spotlight on local artists, often known for their innovative techniques. Like Hong Kong itself, their work blends Western and Chinese traditions. Check the museum’s website to find out what’s on during your visit. To get to the museum, leave Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station by Exit E. You can also take the Star Ferry from Central or Wan Chai to the ferry port in Tsim Sha Tsui, and then enjoy a scenic 10-minute walk to the museum. The Hong Kong Museum of Art has a branch venue, the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, located in Hong Kong Park. Flagstaff House is the oldest surviving example of British-style architecture in Hong Kong and houses a large collection of ceramics.
