The west gate of Hwaseong Fortress is an imposing structure that looms above the magnificent walled fort complex, symbolizing the power of King Jeongjo.

Experience the enormity and architectural beauty of Hwaseomun Gate, one of the four gateways of Hwaseong Fortress. Located on the cardinal points of the compass, the gateways give the sprawling fort complex a sense of symmetry. Reach Hwaseomun Gate on a walking tour around the old city walls or visit the gate to admire its imposing military design and traditional architectural flourishes.

Stroll around the complex on a guided or self-guided walking tour. When you reach the western gate, take a moment to appreciate its innovative 18th-century design. The gate’s architecture incorporates military strength with stylized flair. Note the stone door, which is known as a mujigae (rainbow). Over this, the ongseong (defensive gate) rises above in a crescent-shaped arch. The Hwaseomun Gate mimics the design of the Changnyongmun Gate, the gate’s eastern equivalent.

Check out the gate’s solid granite base and peer up at its hip-and-gable rooftop. Look north of the gate to see the adjoining watchtower, Gongsimdon. The tower contains a series of interconnecting stairways with peepholes, so that guards could efficiently protect the west gate.

If you are embarking on a walking tour along the old fort walls, begin at the south gate, Paldalmun Gate, and walk west along the walls. The walk is steep in some places, but you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views across the historic complex and the new sections of the city.

Hwaseomun Gate is on the western side of Hwaseong Fortress, near the visitor center. There is an admission fee to enter the fortress and visit its historic sites and museums. Learn more about the complex with an audio guide or guided tour. The fortress complex is open daily year-round. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and allow plenty of time to explore the magnificent hilltop vistas. A good time to visit is in fall, when the fortress is decorated with the fiery colors of the leaves.
