Ibiza Town

Travel Guide
Benirras Beach featuring tropical scenes, a sandy beach and swimming
Visit the capital of Ibiza and explore its ancient Old Town, relax on attractive beaches and dance until dawn in its nightclubs.

The Spanish island of Ibiza has a reputation as Europe’s riotous nightclubbing capital, but it is also alive with cultural and historical riches in places such as Ibiza Town. This Mediterranean port city is the island’s capital, a pretty destination of whitewashed houses, beaches and well-preserved Old Town buildings. Tour an ancient cathedral, venture into burial chambers that are thousands of years old and party at one of the nightclubs.

One of Ibiza Town's biggest attractions is the Dalt Vila, the ancient fortified Old Town perched atop a hill. Explore its cobbled streets leading to centuries-old churches, historical buildings and museums. Tour the 13th-century Catedral de Ibiza and glean insights into the island's history at the Archeological Museum of Ibiza. Enjoy intriguing pieces at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Just outside the fortress walls is the necropolis Puig des Molins. This ancient Phoenician cemetery was established in the 7th century B.C. and contains thousands of tombs. View exhibits of artifacts, such as jewelry, weapons and coins, found in some of the burial chambers.

For shopping, head to La Marina, a popular neighborhood stretching around the harbor. Visit numerous shops as well as waterfront bars and restaurants.

While tourists flock to Ibiza during the summer, the island is a year-round destination with about 300 days of sunshine. Relax on beaches scattered along the local coastline, including Talamanca Beach and Playa d’en Bossa.

Your evenings in Ibiza Town can be as restrained or as exciting as you like. Select a quiet restaurant in the Old Town for a candlelit supper or have a wild evening in one of the clubs, such as Pacha.

Reach Ibiza Town by flying into Ibiza Airport, about 4 miles (6 kilometers) southwest of the capital. Alternatively, catch a ferry from mainland Spain and arrive in the city's port. Get around on foot or by bus, taxi or rental car and enjoy the history, beaches and social scene.

It could be a nice place but I didn't have time to see more of Ibiza. Next time when I visit I will definitely go north and avoid the southern part.
