This vast 19th-century church towers over Trinidad’s main square and is a great starting point for exploring this UNESCO-protected city.

Experience the serene spiritual ambiance of Trinidad at the Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad (Church of the Holy Trinity). Appreciate this religious landmark’s neoclassical façade, multiple naves and centuries-old relics. Work on the present-day Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad was complete in 1892.

Stand at the main entrance and note the arresting size of the church, which is one of the largest in Cuba. It displays a blend of Greek, neoclassical and Spanish-colonial styles. A striking element is its main, two-tier façade. The lower level has a series of arched portals framed by decorative pilasters. The upper level features additional arches and pilasters crowned by a triangular-shaped pediment.

Inside, the church’s main artistic features are its richly decorated altars. They were hand carved by Dominican monks using fine Cuban wood. Most notable is the Gothic-style altar that honors Our Lady of Mercy. Pay attention to the huge whitewashed arches and marble benches of the nave.

Many devotees visit the church to pay their respects to a revered 18th-century image of the Lord of the True Cross. Legend suggests that the image was destined for Veracruz however, the ship carrying it had to leave some of its freight in Trinidad before continuing its voyage. The statue was part of the freight and locals took this as a divine intervention.

The church is open Monday to Saturday around lunchtime and admission is free. It’s an active place of worship so dress appropriately and remain quiet when visiting. Photography is allowed inside.

The Iglesia de la Santisima Trinidad dominates the northeastern side of Plaza Mayor, which marks the heart of Trinidad’s historic center. Find several major city attractions within a short walk of the church and Plaza Mayor. Among these are the Church and Monastery of St. Francis, Colonial Architecture Museum and House of the Conspirators. Visit the House of Music and Palacio de Cantero, home to the Municipal Museum of History.
