As one of the main points of entry to the Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, the Janganmum Gate is a majestic and imposing construction. Its tiered layers recall the Korea of centuries ago, when the reigning monarch would arrive from the nearby capital of Hanyang, which is now Seoul. As you approach the castle from the northern side, marvel at the sight of the architectural treasure appearing to rise from behind the surrounding streets and highways.
When you get closer, spot the large Korean symbols draped across the upper tier of the gate. Greens, yellows and browns adorn the façade of the portal’s top layers.
Walk through the arched entrance in the center of the gate’s stone base, which serves as an intriguing contrast to the colorful upper half.
Inside the gate itself, look up to the colorful mural adorning the ceiling. Visit the structure at sunrise or sunset for some of the best photo opportunities.
Stroll along the paths meandering through the grassy areas at the foot of the gate to view it from various angles. Set down a blanket on the lawn on a sunny afternoon and enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of the trees. You can also walk along the top of parts of the structure, where you’ll find old cannons and other military relics.
Spot the various colorful flags and banners draping the wall of the portal. Stay at this vantage point after the sun goes down and enjoy views of the twinkling lights of Suwon. The gate itself is majestic at night, when covered in light.
Find the Janganmum Gate on the northern side of the Hwaseong Fortress, in the heart of Suwon. Ride a bus to the stop just outside the gate and get around the site on foot.
While you’re in the area, stop at other attractions such as the Seojangdae Western Command Post, Haenggung Street and the Paldalmun Gate.
