Visit the museums, cafés and Orthodox churches between the old city walls and towers that are among the oldest parts of the city.

As the historic site of dozens of bloody battles, Kalemegdan Citadel is the proud emblem of Belgrade. After being destroyed and rebuilt more than 40 times over the centuries, today it is a lively area with fairs and restaurants. Wander through this old-world treasure that once enclosed the city’s entire population.

The citadel stands atop a geological ridge. Admire the views of the Great War Island at the point where the Danube River meets the Sava River. See preserved relics, such as cannons.

Take photos of the stone fortress that has stood for many centuries. Among the highlights are Clock Gate, Zindan Gate, Jaksić Tower and the Rose Church. At night, the imposing walls and towers of the citadel are awash with light.

Explore the various sections of this large fortress complex. Nearest to the river is Donji Grad, where you will find the Daredevil Tower. Visit its museum about Greek revolutionary Rigas Feraios. Gaze up at the majestic Sveta Petka Orthodox church.

Climb to higher ground in the Gornji Grad section, with its charming paths and promenades that run through a park. Snap photos of the Pobednik monument, which comprises a tall column supporting a character holding a sword in triumph. It commemorates Serbia’s triumphs in the Balkan Wars and World War I.

The other sectors of the fortress are spread across the picturesque Kalemegdan Park. Visit the Military Museum, the Monument of Gratitude to France and the Museum of Forestry and Hunting. See the famous white animals of the historic Belgrade Zoo.

The Kalemegdan Citadel covers a large area in the northern part of Belgrade. It is next to Kalemegdan Park just south of the Danube River. Ride the tram to one of the many nearby stops, such as Kalemegdan and Beko. Visit other attractions in the area, including Kalemegdan Gallery, part of the Natural History Museum.
