Katnook Estate

Sip on award-winning vintages in one of the Coonawarra wine region’s oldest vineyards, where vines stretch across acres of fertile red soil.

A visit to the Katnook Estate combines a historical experience with the opportunity to taste its celebrated wines. Explore buildings that date back to the late 1800s, where you can learn about the processes behind winemaking, before sampling the celebrated wines created here. The team at Katnook Estate have won multiple trophies and accolades for their vintages, making a trip here a vital stop on any visit to Coonawarra.

Katnook Estate gained its name from an indigenous word meaning “Fat Land.” See and touch the terra rossa, the rich, red soil that has proved fertile ground for grapes since 1896. John Riddoch, a wine pioneer, established the estate here then, making it one of the oldest in the Coonawarra wine region.

Explore nearly 500 acres (200 hectares) of vineyards which produce a wide variety of grapes. Stop by the Woolshed, which is one of the oldest buildings on the estate and the site of Riddoch’s first winemaking endeavor.

Sample the produce of the vineyards in the Cellar Door, another building created by Riddoch in the late 1800s. Here you can snack on local food in between tastings of various Katnook vintages. Viticulture experts will talk you through your free tasting session, providing an insight into the story behind each wine you sample.

Head to the side of the Cellar Door to look at the terra rossa pit, where you can learn about the soil profile that makes these wines so special.

Katnook Estate creates a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Take a picnic to one of the scenic lunch spots that overlook the fields. Children and pets are also welcome at this friendly vineyard, with facilities available to keep the whole family happy during a tasting session.

The Katnook Estate is open throughout the year, with open fires in winter creating a relaxing atmosphere. Book ahead to be guaranteed a tasting session, then drive for 5 minutes north of historic Penola. Tour groups can be arranged by appointment in advance, while the Cellar Door is also available for functions and weddings.
