Set atop the beautiful Purcell Mountains, this sunny resort is thick with perfectly fluffy snow and features one of North America’s largest gladed terrains.

On the sparsely populated drive through the Purcell Mountains, Kimberley Alpine Resort will be apparent from its cozy cottages lining the wooded clearings. Just beyond this charming hamlet is some of the best skiing country in British Columbia. In winter, spend a full day on the slopes. In summer, mountain bike through the wilderness.

Follow the lamplit piste during a night ski. Spend the day jibbing at Kimberley’s Rail Park, which features rail courses for beginning, intermediate and advanced boarders and skiers. Advanced riders should also be sure to check out one of the largest gladed terrains in North America, the Black Forest.

About 60 of the 80 runs on Kimberley Alpine Resort are for intermediate or advanced skiers. This resort is considered one of the best for families and beginners. Rent your gear on the mountain and learn from experienced instructors. They will help you customize an experience of Kimberley’s runs that’s perfectly suited to your ability. The resort also has an extensive range of courses for children.

During the summer Kimberley becomes a very different destination. Play the greens at the Les Furber-designed Trickle Creek Golf Resort. Track the diverse flora and fauna of Kimberley’s 1,800-acre (800-hectare) Nature Park. Take a Mining Tour of the Sullivan Mine and Kimberley’s Underground Mining Railway.

While you’re taking a break from the slopes, enjoy a delicious meal at one of several restaurants on-mountain. Order a hearty meal of barbecued ribs or a steak at restaurants within walking distance of the chairlift. Have soup in a bread bowl at the café midway down the slope.

Fly into Calgary, Alberta and drive 4 hours southwest or take a flight from Calgary to nearby Cranbrook and drive 30 minutes northwest to Kimberley Alpine Resort. Car rentals are available at Calgary International Airport and in the town of Banff, Alberta. Stay in a hotel, motel or condo on the mountain or in the town of Kimberley.
