Knox Mountain Park

Knox Mountain Park featuring a river or creek, a sunset and a skyscraper

The city of Kelowna’s largest natural reserve stretches from the shores of Okanagan Lake to mountain peaks via a network of hiking and biking trails.

Explore pretty winding trails and spot wildlife in Knox Mountain Park, a 766-acre (310-hectare) parkland bordered by the shoreline of the magnificent Okanagan Lake. Protected since 1939, the park contains a variety of natural ecosystems and is home to an array of birdlife. Stroll, jog or cycle your way around the park’s trails and admire its flora and fauna. You might see some species that are on British Columbia’s endangered list, such as turtles, badgers and herons.

Choose from a selection of trails and begin exploring the vast parkland. The Apex Trail leads to a high lookout on Knox Mountain’s plateau, which stands nearly 980 feet (300 meters) above the lake. Wind your way through Douglas firs and ponderosa pines as you reach the lookout. From here, you’ll see expansive views of the surrounding scenery, as well as the township of Kelowna sprawling southwest from the foot of the mountain. Look down on the steep northwestern flanks of the mountain, which give way to the picturesque lakeshore. If you are feeling up to the challenge, take on the Summit Trail, which is a short but steep walking track.

Walk or cycle around Knox Mountain Park’s Kathleen Lake Trail and enjoy pretty lakeside views. The Pavilion Trail is a gentle walking track that passes by the Pioneer Pavilion and has excellent Okanagan Lake views. Stroll north to reach the 1910 vault known as Paul’s Tomb, which is situated near an Okanagan Lake swimming beach.

Between April and May look for several species of wildflowers, including the Okanagan sunflower. Spy chipmunks and mule deer and try to catch a glimpse of rare bird species, such as the olive-sided flycatcher or Lewis’ woodpecker.

You can drive through Knox Mountain Park on a scenic roadway, which is open in the summer months. Park at the road entrance on the southwestern corner of Knox Mountain Park or drive to picnic sites and park near the Caretaker’s House in the center of the parkland.

Reach Knox Mountain Park within a 10-minute drive from Kelowna. The park is open daily and is free to enter.
