Couples getting married, those thinking about marriage and others already wed flock to Kraft Azalea Garden in the Central Florida city of Winter Park. Visit this relaxing area with a loved one or by yourself for a peaceful interlude during a busy day. The classic white columns of the garden’s arcade provide an idyllic setting next to the lake for professional and amateur photographers to capture special moments.
Cypress trees abound throughout the gardens, adding to the whimsical surroundings. Sit and enjoy this area on the benches along the paths.
Find a large banyan tree, unusual this far north as they are commonly found only in the southern part of the state. The area suffered a severe frost in 1989 and other banyan trees succumbed to the cold, but this one survived, perhaps due to its proximity to Lake Maitland. The tree’s exact age is unknown but it possibly dates to 1938 when the gardens were first developed.
The gardens are also known for the stately white birds known as great egrets. They have established the area as a nesting ground and can be spotted throughout the year grazing along the lake’s surface or doing their jerky walks on the shore. Up to 50 nesting pairs use the gardens to rear their young from February to June, providing excellent photo opportunities. Stand quietly at a distance from the birds to allow this annual event to progress naturally. Ospreys, woodpeckers and mockingbirds also make their homes here.
Stay for a magnificent sunset as you end the day in this peaceful setting. As its name suggests, azaleas are in abundance if you are here during the flowering period from February to early March.
Kraft Azalea Garden is on Alabama Drive and open every day from morning until dusk. Be inspired with a visit to the garden to get married or perhaps renew your wedding vows. You can reserve the garden for a private ceremony of up to 20 people.
