Piece together the history of art around the world through the varied galleries of this large museum with a focus on pre-Columbian and Asian art.

The strength of the enormous Krannert Art Museum is its variety, with collections from numerous time periods, genres and forms dating back thousands of years. Based in a majestic structure in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the gallery is divided into a great range of categories and subsections. Browse the paintings, photography and history exhibits in this extraordinary museum.

Reflecting the impressive art within its walls, the museum’s building is an architectural masterpiece that blends post-modernist designs with neo-Egyptian qualities. Admire the exceptional brise soleil, a decorative screen of golden tassel-like features. Notice the intriguing sculpture flanking the museum’s staircase in front of the manicured lawn.

Once inside the museum, inspect some of its 10,000 works of varying styles and eras. The graceful Bow Gallery showcases European and American pieces from the 18th to the 20th century. Examine the pottery and tools in the Ancient Mediterranean Gallery.

Making the museum uniquely impressive are several special elements. Look through the metalwork, textiles and jewelry in the comprehensive Ancient Andean Arts gallery and the paintings and objects of the Encounters: The Arts of Africa section.

The museum is known for several famous works of art. Marvel at Andy Warhol’s Marilyn, Edward Weston’s Untitled (Nude) and Still Life of Flowers in a Glass Vase on a Stone Table Ledge by Anna Ruysch. Don’t leave without seeing the Reliquary Guard Figure from Gabon or the Peruvian Ceremonial Drum.

Stroll through some of the temporary exhibits that display here for months or even years. These have covered such themes as Swahili art and postwar printmaking.

Visit the museum during open periods Monday through Saturday from morning until late afternoon. It is free to enter and stays open until late on Thursdays.

The Krannert Art Museum stands in the southeastern corner of Champaign. Ride the bus from the Illinois Terminal in Downtown Champaign to reach the museum in 10 minutes. Explore the surroundings for the Zuppke Field at Memorial Stadium, the Spurlock Museum and the State Farm Center.
