Once an essential part of the city’s fortifications, this tower is now best known for its brick Gothic architecture and the local history group that meets inside.

On the northwestern corner of Rostock’s Old Town, the Kröpeliner Tor is certainly an imposing sight. Rising 175 feet (54 meters) above the city, it served as one of the entrances during the glory days of the Hanseatic League, from the 13th century onward. Sit in the adjacent park as you admire its stepped gables and black tile roof, imagining the procession that once passed inside and out.

Head to the Kröpeliner Tor to explore the neighborhood behind it as well, the thriving students’ quarter. Have coffee or a local pastry before following the tower’s peaked roof to its place of honor at the end of the shopping street Kröpeliner Straße. Look up at the imposing brick Gothic structure, imagining the views that defenders had of approaching armies from atop its six stories. Spot the blue, white and red Mecklenburg coat of arms on the city side of the gate, and the magnificent bronze griffin on the field side.

Go inside the tower, where the local History Workshop Rostock has its headquarters. Peruse the exhibit outlining the history of Rostock’s fortifications. Rostock’s contemporary history is revealed through rotating exhibitions. Sign up for a tour of the tower and other parts of the city or come back in the evening for a talk with a local historian or author, who will provide even more information about this fascinating city.

Walk to the Kröpeliner Tor in 10 minutes from the New Market in Old Town. The tower is located on the edge of the old medieval city, very close to the river. Drive here in 10 minutes from the main train station or walk in 20 minutes. A tram stop leading to the New Market and other parts of the city is located immediately beside the tower. Free parking is available on the street nearby, but Rostock’s center is easily walkable.

The tower is open to visitors daily from morning to early evening and closes a bit earlier in the winter. Check the website for prices for events and tours.
