Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary

Two daily feeding sessions draw crowds of tourists to watch monkeys as they swing through their natural habitat.

Walk through thick mangrove forest to reach observation platforms and discover the fascinating species of proboscis monkey. Known for their large noses and playful nature, the proboscis monkey can only be found in northern Borneo. A day at the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is an excellent family event and a great way to follow a visit to the Sepilok Orangutang Sanctuary.

In 1994, the 400-acre (162-hectare) area of forest was purchased for commercial development. After learning about the monkeys that lived on the land, the owner had a change of heart and instead dedicated the land to the protection of the proboscis monkey. Today the sanctuary continues to provide protection for the species but has also become a popular attraction.

Make your way to the sanctuary for the morning feeding session, the busiest time for the monkeys. At the first platform rangers feed crowds of excited monkeys guava and cucumber. Be within arms reach of the playful creatures as they swing between trees and vines. Look out for the young monkeys clutching their mothers as they are taken for a ride.

In the afternoon, a second platform is used for the feeding session. The much larger platform at Bangakatan House regularly receives visitors from neighbors, including the Silver Leaf Monkey. The Oriental Pied Hornbill, a stunning bird with a large double beak is native to the region and often makes an appearance. Watch as the animals interact and play amongst themselves. This is the best location for photographs as monkeys regularly play at your feet.

Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is located 24 miles (38 kilometers) from Sandakan, and can be reached by car. Half-day tours are offered by a number of operators in town. The sanctuary has an onsite restaurant serving simple Malay and Chinese dishes. Dormitory and private room accommodation is available within the grounds.
