Take photos of a mosque complex with a backdrop of bright colours reflected in the water, from the blue sky to green hills and pink flamingoes.

Larnaca Salt Lake is a scenic area of shallow water where pink flamingoes gather. In summer, walk across the dry, moon-like terrain. The water has a mean depth of about 3.2 feet (1 meter) in winter.

The lake is the famous home of the Hala Sultan Tekke, one of the most important spiritual complexes in Islam.Take a leisurely walk on a hiking trail around the enormous lake, which encompasses 3,920 acres (1,585 hectares) in total. Keep following the scenic path to reach the Islamic complex, which accepts people of all faiths. Look around the mosque, mausoleum and cemetery to get an idea of the historic value of the site. Find the tomb of Muhammad’s foster mother and hear the tale of her death, which allegedly occurred on this very site many centuries ago.

Sit at one of the many picnic tables in the area to enjoy the serene ambiance. Bring enough snacks and drinks for the trip, as there are no shops here. Stay into the evening to see the changing colors of the sky as the sun goes down.

Capture photos of the mosque across the sparkling white terrain of salt particles in the lake. Photo opportunities from other angles incorporate the town of Larnaca or the green mountains on the horizon. Take binoculars to spot birds, including many species of water birds.

Salt gathered from this lake was once one of the country’s main exports. Learn about the legend of the curse executed by St. Lazarus on an old lady who refused him water, thus leading to the saltiness of the lake.

Larnaca Salt Lake is next to the Larnaca International Airport, about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) south of the city. Rent a car or take a taxi for the 10-minute journey from the center of Larnaca.
