From exploring the busy, attraction-packed capital of Rome to hiking around sparkling lakes and rolling hills, Lazio offers a wide range of activities. Although the most famous of Lazio’s attractions are undoubtedly Rome’s ancient archaeological sites, which remind visitors of the pivotal role the city played in the Roman Empire, there is lots more to see here. Survey artwork in world-class museums, take a vineyard tour in the countryside and relax by the sea.
Lazio’s most famous destination is Rome, “the Eternal City.” Marvel at iconic landmarks, such as the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine. People-watch near Piazza del Campidoglio and make a wish by throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain. Don’t leave without entering the Vatican City to marvel at the fresco-covered Sistine Chapel and the magnificent St. Peter’s Basilica.
Further inland is Rieti, home of the ancient capital of Sabina. This mountainous region on the slopes of the Reatini Mountains is a great starting point for nature excursions. Hike through the Reatini Lakes Nature Reserve to spot protected plants and birds, such as herons and little grebes. Other noteworthy beauty spots include Lake Bolsena, one of the biggest volcanic lakes in Europe, which affords stunning views out to the islands of Bisentina and Martana.
Discover Lazio’s history in the well-preserved medieval core of Viterbo, a town which also serves as a great base for exploring the verdant northern reaches of Lazio. Head to the coastal resort of Ostia to inspect the ruins of the ancient Roman town and wander around the UNESCO-listed ancient estates of Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este, both in Tivoli.
Start your journey by flying into either of Rome’s airports, Leonardo da Vinci Airport at Fiumicino or Ciampino Airport. Ride the metro while in Rome or take a train from the airport to reach other areas of Lazio.
Many people come to Lazio during the warmer months, but consider visiting in the winter to take advantage of snowy mountain scenery and the ski resorts of Terminillo, Livata and Campo Staffi.
