Macas Beach

With ample restaurants, a large and safe saltwater swimming pool and plenty of amenities nearby, this beach is one of the most convenient on the coast.

Maçãs Beach comprises a short but attractive stretch of sand backed by a resort town of the same name. Join locals soaking up the sun on the beach and swimming in the open-air saltwater swimming pool, which provides a safe swimming environment away from the currents and waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

According to local lore, the beach’s name, which translates to Apple Beach, references the fact that in times past apples dropped off trees upstream into the Colares river before washing up on shore here. Search the sands here today though and you’ll find them totally apple free.

Arrive early and lay out your towel on the sands. Though clear and clean, the waters here can be quite rough and a little cold. The strong waves are well suited for bodyboarding and surfing. Splash about in the shallows.

The beach is popular among both Portuguese and visiting families. For a swimming environment for children that is safe and warmer than the open sea, try the open-air saltwater swimming pool that backs onto the beach. If your little ones still have energy to burn, let them have fun in the playground on the sands.

Many beachgoers come to lie on the sand and enjoy the feeling of the sun’s rays. When you’ve had enough lounging, explore the surrounding area. Find shops and many restaurants serving traditional Portuguese cuisine just steps from the beach.

Maçãs Beach is located 7 miles (12 kilometers) west of Sintra and 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Lisbon. During summer months, a tram runs between Sintra and Maçãs Beach from Friday through Sunday. Alternatively, ride a local bus from Sintra to nearby Praia Grande and walk from there. Ample parking is available near the beach. Because of its easily accessible location, the beach is particularly appealing for travelers who have only a couple of hours to spare.
