Raja\'s Seat
Discover an attractive town surrounded by the Brahmagiri hills, nourished by the Kaveri River and imbued with the rich history of Coorg rulers.

With royal tombs and a temple, rainforests and coffee plantations, Madikeri is full of cultural and natural attractions. This picturesque hill town is perched at an elevation of 5,000 feet (1,525 meters) among green-covered hills. The scenic terrain and cool, wet climate have earned the area the nickname of the Scotland of India

In town, take a tour of the grand historic landmarks that the ancient rulers of the Coorg region left behind. Admire the impressive walls of Madikeri FortOpens in a new window, a defensive palace that was built for the Mysore king, Tipu Sultan. Inside, a museum exhibits relics and presents stories from the town's past.

Climb the hillock in northern Madikeri to see the Gaddige, otherwise known as Raja's Tomb. These royal resting places hold the remains of several nobles, including Linga Rajendra, a 19th-century ruler of the Kodagu region. Appreciate the beauty of the Islamic domes of the tomb buildings and enjoy a pleasant panorama of the city below.

Venture just outside of town to tour Omkareshwara Temple, a spectacular building with white and red towers. The blend of Islamic and Gothic architecture is characteristic of the mixed east-west heritage of the region.

With mountains, forests and waterfalls, there is so much beautiful scenery around Madikeri to explore. Hike through the patchwork landscape of coffee plantations and spice estates. This rich farming land is well known for its aromatic cardamom, peppers and intoxicating Coorg honey.

Drive to Abbi Falls to see the water plunge into the Kaveri River. Visit during the torrential monsoon season when heavy rains swell the cascade. View the crashing water from a suspension bridge opposite.

A nice way to round off your day before heading out for a meal is to go to Raja's SeatOpens in a new window. This pavilion, surrounded by lush gardens, is said to have been a favorite amongst Coorg royals who came here to watch the sun set over the green valleys below.

Madikeri is a beautiful town, rich in history and culture and accessible only by road. Get there via a bus or rental car from several cities, including Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore.
