The hotel is on the National Register and quite unique. Each room is decorated and furnished with antiques. The rooms were clean, the beds comfy and if you enjoy the old times, you use a real key. Our stay was enjoyable. That being said, we had a couple issues. The major issue was our first room on the third floor was right next to the family of the owner/manager I believe. I could hear everything and it was like being on a plane with children coughing, talking and running around and like they were right next to me. I called and asked for a new room, which we were given. The new room was great, although the jacuzzi tub and shower did not work. Small issue for me because I was able to take a bath. The elevator was not inservice, but we had no problem using the stairs even though we were on the 3 rd floor. The manager was very nice and made sure we were able to get into our rooms using the key. We enjoyed the uniqueness but it’s probably not for everyone. We chose this hotel because it was close to the hiking areas we were going to. Not much to do in the town, but that’s not what we were there for.

There use to be a restaurant downstairs. The stairwell leading downstairs is now filled with trash! Everyone that parks near the hotel can see the trash pile is they walk to the front door. And the elevator to the guest rooms doesn't work right. The rider has to push the door open manually half way when entering & again half way when exiting. This is a hazard! I think the owner is happy to make money but doesn't have a long term interest in maintaining/improving this property. Very disappointing because it was a nice place!

We really enjoyed the history of the building and how well it was preserved. The furnishing in the lobby and rooms were of the early 1900s but yet the beds were very comfortable. We were hoping to have the bar open but that was okay. I would recommend this hotel because it truly is beautiful and unique.

Old hotel with beautiful room and soaking tub, very clean. Antiques throughout. Elevator out of order. Second floor undergoing renovation as evidenced by scaffolding left in hallway.

This hotel was constructed in 1876 and fully renovated in the last couple of years. It maintains the look and ambiance of the original throughout while all the HVAC and bathrooms are modern. An architectural gem is my evaluation. It is in the downtown with lots to see and experience. The local food options are good Midwestern and filling. The in house restaurant and bar weren't open at this time. However, the overall experience of a period hotel is worth the stay. We will be returning for another extended stay as the area has so much to see and do in a 45 mile radius of the town and hotel. Bet the fall colors are wonderful.

On the upside: Beautiful old building with a well maintained interior for its age. High ceilings and antique furniture sets it apart from the ordinary. Convenient location for attending a show at Codfish Hollow Barnstormers venue. On the downside: The manager did not provide info about the availability of a refrigerator and microwave. I had to ask for the wifi password. Not a good breakfast, and there are very few dining options in town.

Nice old hotel. The only thing wrong with our room is that it could use a table or two to set stuff down on and a closet or a place to hang cloths.

Hotel needs some love
Hotel seemed clean. I had visited the hotel 25 years ago. it was beautiful at that time. It needs work on the outside, and it looks like they are doing work on the inside in some areas. The hotel is quiet. The bed was wonderful. The whirlpool was very nice. The shower had great water pressure. The elevator is slow and old. The breakfast that is included is a contenential. No seating area in the breakfast room, you need to sit in the lobby or go back to your room. There are no luggage carts so we needed to make several trips to unload. It was definately adequate, and the best option in Maquoketa, other than the B&B in town which fills quickly.
