Although this is an older ryokan, Matsushima Koumura has been kept well by the lovely couple who run it. If you want a taste of the real Japan, and help local businesses thrive then go to this no frills family run ryokan. It is small with only 8 rooms, so not busy at all and allowed a personalized experience. The owners were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The owner even personally drove us to the train station to ensure we would be able to catch our connecting local train to the Shinkansen in Sendai. Our room had a private bath but we chose to try the traditional "sento" located on the 3rd floor. It is not a natural mineral hot spring "onsen" but a regular public bath just for those staying in the inn. The water was nice and hot. Relaxing to soak in after a day of travel and touring. We had the best, most delicious Japanese breakfast here too for a very affordable price. The small town of Matsushima is a beautiful place worth visiting and this inn was within walking distance to the red bridge to Fukuurajima and into town. We enjoyed a nice getaway for a couple of days away from the busy city. I recommend staying here if you want to be treated like family or friends coming home for a special visit. Not for those looking for luxury pampering, nor a high end fancy spa with additional services. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves here and would love to return again!
