Qingdao’s huge seaside square is dominated by an impressive sculpture that commemorates the cultural and socio-political May Fourth Movement.

Unwind with a visit to May Fourth Square, a large public plaza that also encompasses a coastal park. This popular gathering place is named after the May Fourth Movement, an intellectual development that started shortly after World War I.

The huge waterfront expanse is dominated by a 98-feet (30-meter) high bright red sculpture, The Winds of May, which commemorates the movement. Look up and marvel at its red twisting form, which resembles the shape of a whirlwind. At night it is even more of an awe-inspiring sight when illuminated by bright lights. Then turn your gaze out across Fushan Bay for the sea fountain. This large water feature shoots jets up to 328 feet (100 meters) into the air.

Stretch your legs with a walk through the wide open space, which is filled with immaculate green lawns. The square is a big draw for kite flyers, so bring your own or watch the locals sending theirs soaring into the sky.

May Fourth Square is also a great starting point for strolls along the shoreline. During your waterfront excursions, you will find plenty of stalls selling souvenirs and snacks. Pause to take in the sea views and to breathe in the fresh air.

Make your way over to the Olympic Sailing Centre, built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. From here you can rent a speedboat or sailing boat for a trip around the bay. At the nearby mall, break for a coffee or a meal and browse through luxury shops.

In the opposite direction down the esplanade is Qingdao Number 1 Bathing Beach. Relax on the warm sand, go for a swim and then round off the afternoon in a café overlooking the Yellow Sea.

With its city center location, right in front of the Municipal Government Building, May Fourth Square is on the route of several local buses.
