Arrive early to watch the knighting ceremony and birds of prey demonstration or take a look around the Hall of Arms and Torture Museum doors open 75 minutes before the show starts to allow plenty of time to absorb the atmosphere. Seats inside the arena are unreserved, so early birds can bag the best view.The excitement mounts as the tournament begins, pitting jousting knights in shining armour against each other in a contest of skill and bravery. The audacious duels of the flamboyant riders and swordsmen are presided over by the King’s Court, richly attired in colourful period dress. Visitors are encouraged to enter the spirit by wearing crowns and waving banners.After the pageantry, it’s time to enjoy the feast, but don’t be surprised when you find your table bare of cutlery – in Medieval Times it’s strictly hands-only! Only the menu has changed to keep pace with modern living, and there are vegetarian and other dietary options available alongside the historically authentic meat-based dishes. Once you’ve eaten your fill, there’s still time to choose a memento of your medieval experience in the well-stocked gift shop.Medieval Times operates nine “castles” across America and has built a reputation for its spectacular shows and highly skilled actors, riders and technicians. The Orange County castle has plenty of on-site parking but its popularity means that it’s best to book if you want to guarantee a table on a particular evening.
