Wander around the historic center of Merano to find the market. Enjoy the medieval lanes and city gates which enclose the pedestrianized town center. The Merano Christmas Market in its current iteration opened here in 1993, inspired by the city’s medieval traditions. It has since won awards for its eco-credentials and for being one of the prettiest Christmas markets in Europe.
Browse the various stalls of the market, all of which have a traditional appearance with wooden cladding and sloping roofs. Pick up locally made handicrafts, confections and gifts. Stalls sell everything from cosmetics to honey, ceramics to baby clothes.
Sample South Tyrolean specialties at the food stalls. Cured meats, cheeses, brandies and herbs from the mountains surrounding Merano are ideal for taking home with you. Seek out the hot food stands for a snack while you’re exploring. Sip on perfectly prepared mulled wine for a classic Christmas market experience.
Attend one of the events in the market. Classical music is played for guests browsing the stalls, while children can stop at creative workshops and watch street shows. Put on a pair of ice skates and glide around the rink on Piazza Terme for some wintry fun.
The Merano Christmas Market runs from late November until early January each year, closing only on Christmas Day. Head here from mid-morning until the evening, making the most of later opening hours over the weekend. The market is located in central Merano, covering two blocks of the old town along the bank of the river. Walk here in just over 10 minutes from the main train station.
