Metzitzim Beach

Loved for its golden sand, shallow waters and waterfront restaurant, this family-friendly beach on the Lahat Promenade is a great place to bring children.

Metzitzim Beach is one of the 13 official beaches that spread out along Tel Aviv’s miles of Mediterranean coastline. Great views of the piercing-blue sea, fine sand and children’s entertainment make it an excellent place to relax. Metzitzim Beach takes its name from an Israeli movie by the same name, which means Peeping Tom. Despite the unusual name, visitors of all ages come to hang out at this calm coastal area.

Hot summers and mild winters make this and other city beaches popular year round, so arrive early to get the best spot. Deck chairs, sun loungers and umbrellas are available to rent. There are also some open-sided wooden huts, which offer welcome shade from the beating sun. The water here is calm and shallow and lifeguards are on duty during daylight hours.

Join in a game of pick-up beach soccer or volleyball and watch locals play matkot, the Israeli version of paddle ball that is considered an unofficial national sport. Matkot racquets and balls are sold throughout the city, if you want to try your hand at the game. Children will enjoy the facilities at the beach’s shaded playground.

When hunger strikes, the beachfront restaurant is the perfect place to snack on typical Israeli fare and sip on cold drinks. Come in the evening, order a beer and admire the picturesque sunset. Alternatively, bring your own food and sit at the picnic benches on the promenade. You’ll often be sharing the benches with locals playing games of chess.

Metzitzim Beach sits to the north of Hilton Beach and a 5-minute walk from Tel Aviv Port. Drivers can use the metered car parks nearby. There’s plenty to see and do within a short walk from the beach. Sample the nightlife at Tel Aviv Port, escape the crowds at Independence Park, amble along Lahat Promenade and follow paths into the sprawling Yarkon Park.
