See the towers and spires of Mikulov Chateau (Zámek Mikulov) punctuating the skyline of the town of Mikulov like a castle from a fairy-tale movie. This Baroque masterpiece and former governor’s palace dates back to the mid-13th century. The noble Dietrichstein family took control in the 1500s. The structure was later refurbished following World War II bomb damage. Today Mikulov Castle is home to the Regional Museum of Mikulov.
Access the castle via guided tour. Each tour option visits different areas of the landmark. The complete history tour covers life at the chateau from the Gothic era to the start of the 19th century. Walk in the footsteps of members of the Dietrichstein family and Napoleon Bonaparte. Browse portraits of the Dietrichsteins in the Dietrichstein Gallery.
Admire the sculptures by Czech artist Ignác Lengelacher that adorn the Honorary Yard. See an exhibit of scientific instruments and 11,000 books in the Chateau Library. Note the Baroque-style dome above the Main Tower, which replaced a pyramid roof that burned down in 1945. Also of interest is the Blade Tower, used primarily as a lookout and to ward off attacks.
Go to the Chateau Cellar and marvel at a wine barrel capable of storing over 26,000 gallons (100,000 liters). Learn about viticulture in Czechia’s Moravia region via exhibits of drinking vessels, winemaking tools and presses. Another exhibit tells the story of Roman and Germanic influence in Moravia. Be sure to wander around the ornamental garden, which features a fountain and offers views over Mikulov’s rooftops.
Walk to the chateau in 20 minutes from Mikulov’s main train station. It’s close to the town’s other major attractions. Among these are the Dietrichstein Tomb, Church of St. Wenceslas and Church of St. John the Baptist.
Mikulov Chateau is open daily during the summer and on select days in other months from late March to late November. Admission fees vary for the different guided tours. Find full details on the official website of the Regional Museum of Mikulov. Alternatively, ask at the tourist information center on Mikulov’s main square.
