The Pill Box is the perfect getaway next to the Cowpasture River

Whether you are looking for a quiet place to relax and get away from the routine of daily life or you seek a special place to recharge and reconnect with loved ones, a visit to the Pill Box, located on the pristine waters of the Cowpasture River, offers the ideal escape.

The Pill Box has three bedrooms with two twin beds and one bedroom with a queen bed. There is a covered porch and is climate controlled. There is high- speed internet access. (Sleeps 8)

The Pill Box serves as the camp's healthcare facility during the summer months. This accommodation is a utilitarian building and does not provide a kitchen. Included is a refrigerator, microwave, a coffee maker, and a double plate counter top electric burner. Please feel free to bring a grill to cook meals. There are many restaurants you can visit or order take-out from. There is no "dining area" however there is a large desk with some folding chairs in which the guests may use. Please see the photos included in the listing.

If you have a larger group, please contact us about additional housing.

If you would like to book the Pill Box any time during mid-May through mid-June, please message me about availability.

Guests will have access to the scenic Cowpasture River frontage - great for swimming, canoeing, or tubing. Guests may also enjoy walking trails, hiking nearby, basketball, tennis and volleyball. (The net on the tennis court will be taken down to store for the winter months)

If you plan on taking a canoe out on the river, we ask that you wear a PFD at all times and to canoe upstream and float back down and to get out at our beach area (where you put in). There is nowhere to pull out as you go downstream as it leads to private property. Please place the canoe back on the rack when you are done. We do have PFD’s that will fit a teenager however, you may want to bring your own to make sure you have one that fits correctly for an adult or small child. The river is within a short walk. We ask people not to park in the grass or down at the river.

Other things to note:
-This is a tobacco free property. Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on the grounds or inside buildings.
-We have a great deal of respect for nature and do not allow fishing or hunting on the property and firearms are not allowed on the property at any time.
-This is not a pet friendly home.
-Please do not ride bikes, skateboard, or roller skate on the tennis and basketball courts.
-Bath County has a 10:00pm noise ordinance. Please be respectful of our neighbors and other families staying in the rentals close by.
-The posted speed limit on the campgrounds is 10 m.p.h.
-Verizon works well. AT&T is spotty. We do have Wifi you can connect to.

We are located near the historic towns of Hot Springs and Warm Springs and the old railroad hamlet of Clifton Forge. Nearby attractions include: The Omni Homestead Resort, Garth Newel Music Center, the Masonic Theater, Douthat State Park, Lake Moomaw and Hidden Valley Recreation Area (located in the George Washington National Forest). Additional recreational opportunities abound with numerous hikes and scenic drives throughout the Alleghany Highlands. Great Place
Better than advertised. Would recommend for for a group of 8 or less. Kitchen is. It equipped for cooking meals but Clifton Forge is only 25 mins away. Camp Director Chasity was very helpful before and during our stay.

Great camp
We enjoyed our stay. Lovely surroundings. I have to admit I didn’t realize that it was an infirmary. The twin beds were firm (not much padding) for those that like softer beds. Overall a good experience.

Fun catching up with family.
We had a great time at this amazing camp. I felt like we were in the movie parent trap. I highly recommend this to anyone just looking to get away from everything.

I enjoyed staying at a historic summer camp for two evenings. Beautiful spot.
I think the camp needs to make sure people realize this is the nurses station. No living room or TV. That did not bother me but some others might find that a problem.

Quiet Solitude
The property is in a nice secluded location if that's what you're looking for (and we were) with some nice amenities on the property like basketball, tennis and canoeing or kayaking. It's right adjacent to the river. Nice trails to walk or run. I think it would have been better if a table and chairs could have been placed in the Pill Box for eating. With only two of us, we made due, but with more than that, it would have been really inconvenient. There also is no stove top, so either you need to bring an indoor or outdoor grill, or just use microwaveable food items. Going out to eat is quite a hike. Because of the things you would normally expect to be available in a living space, but were not, I thought it was a bit overpriced. But it was clean and comfortable enough. The Pill Box is the regular work space for camp medical staff or nurse . It wasn't clear that we were renting the camp infirmary. The beds were also camp beds, so a little on the thin, firm side. Still enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly and accommodating.
