Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano showing heritage architecture and a ruin

History and heritage lie at the heart of life in this fascinating community, often described as the birthplace of Orange County.

Mission San Juan Capistrano is one of 21 self-sufficient religious and educational communities which sprung up across California during the 18th century. Their aim was to expand Spanish colonial influence and spread Christianity to the indigenous population of Native Americans.San Juan Capistrano was the first community in Orange County. Founded in 1776 by Spanish Franciscans, it was home to over 1,000 people and their farm animals at its peak in 1806. Today it is a popular tourist destination where the history and culture of California is brought vividly to life. One of its noted architectural treasures is the Great Stone Church, dubbed the “American Acropolis” for its classical Greco-Roman style. Once the epicentre of mission life, it suffered serious earthquake damage in 1812. Serra’s Chapel, dating from 1782, is the oldest building in California still in continuous use, and features a magnificent Baroque-style altarpiece. Before finding out more about the daily lives of its inhabitants through fascinating museum displays, wander around the beautiful grounds to get a feel for the mission’s agricultural origins – it was here that the first Californian wine was produced from the Criolla or “mission” grape. Feed the koi fish, pan for gold, make an adobe brick or weave a Native American basket for an immersive living history experience that makes the mission a popular choice for school parties. Each March brings the famous Return of the Swallows, who flock to the mission to build their nests in the church ruins. This event is marked with a festive celebration on St Joseph’s Day, 19th March, when the mission is filled with the sweet sounds of mariachi music and live performances to welcome the homecoming birds.Mission San Juan Capistrano is open daily except some public holidays. Introductory one-hour tours are held at weekends, but many people prefer to explore at leisure on a self-guided audio tour, available any day and included in the admission charge. The mission is around a 25-minute drive from the centre of Santa Ana or the South Coast Plaza, and parking is free and plentiful.
