Hike into this secluded beach on Great Keppel Island to plunge into the crystal-clear waters and explore the underwater world with your snorkel and mask.

Monkey Beach is a gorgeous strip of white sand and cerulean shores facing southwest from Great Keppel Island. Discover the beach’s fringing reef and find beautiful coral gardens and schools of iridescent tropical fish. Wander along the curving coastline and look back toward the Capricorn Coast or follow the island’s network of scenic hiking trails.

Stretching 1,804 feet (550 meters) from a headland in the north to the edge of Monkey Point, Monkey Beach has broad sandy shores that overlook the reef. Low waves lap at the shore during high tide, while the reef shelters the waters when the tide is low. Lose track of time as you stroll along the sandy expanse or relax on the soft sands.

Wade out into the shallow water and enjoy the warmth of the gentle waves. Be sure to bring your snorkel gear so that you can explore the captivating world beneath the surface. You’ll see tropical fish, stingrays and a variety of corals and sponges in the fringing reef.

There are two ways to reach Monkey Beach. To access the northern end of the beach, walk the short but rugged headland trail that follows the curve of the hill to a steep, forested point from Fishermans Beach. Alternatively, take the easier trail that reaches Monkey Point from Long Beach to the south. This trail takes approximately an hour each way. Admire the lush sub-tropical vegetation of the beach and keep a lookout for parrots and seabirds. From here, join up with more trails on the island’s southwestern coast.

Monkey Beach is located on Great Keppel Island’s southwestern coast. It is only accessible on foot and there are no facilities on the beach. Bring plenty of water, sturdy footwear for the walk and sun protection. Fishermans Beach is easily accessible and has a hostel with a bar serving cold drinks. The beach is free to visit at any time and is a great daytrip from Rosslyn Bay Harbour.
