Capture some of the best views of Puerto Plata while journeying up Isabel de Torres Mountain. Take a scenic cable car trip and enjoy a number of attractions on the mountaintop. See a statue of Jesus atop a domed building, wander verdant botanical gardens and experience a stunning view of the Caribbean sunset.
The mountain peak is accessible by two routes. Ride the cable car that leaves from the mountain base and offers great views of the coastline. This trip can last anywhere from five to ten minutes. Alternatively, use the mountain roads to drive or walk to the top. A popular option is to take the satisfying uphill walk and then enjoy the views from the cable car on the way back.
Buy lunch or an afternoon snack from the mountaintop café. On clear days, the view extends out over the Puerto Plata cityscape and over the Caribbean Sea. A domed building nearby is crowned with a statue of Jesus, which bears a striking resemblance to Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer. Venture inside this building to purchase souvenirs. Nearby you’ll find a pleasant botanical garden. Enjoy the smells and sights of local Dominican plant species as you stroll the garden paths.
For a longer walk, explore sign-posted paths through the rainforest covering the mountainside. English-speaking guides are available to take you to the best viewing spots. Before you journey back to town, be sure to browse the few shops and stalls selling souvenirs around the cable car terminal.
Isabel de Torres Mountain is located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. Get to the cable car via taxi from around Puerto Plata. The cable car runs daily and charges a small fee. Set aside half a day for a round-trip visit.
