Museum Brandhorst

Multicolored panels make up the innovative façade of this museum with a rich selection of modern art works, from Warhol to Twombly.

Visit the Museum Brandhorst to see a range of modern art exhibits plucked from the collections belonging to the Henkel trust. The museum’s building is a work of art in its own right, with a façade comprising thousands of angled slats that form a rectangle. Open your mind to the challenging concepts and aesthetics of the modern pieces displayed in this preeminent gallery.

Get a closer look at the colorful panels that give the façade its lively and exceptional appearance. The interior of the museum has an elegant design, with whitewashed walls and floors made of Danish oak. Make your way through the three exhibition halls in this two-floor structure.

Study the large array of works by Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly, among other famous creators in the modern art world. Twombly’s Lepanto cycle drapes the walls of a purpose-built octagonal room and is a particular highlight, depicting a 16th-century naval battle. There are also works by Damien Hirst, Joseph Beuys and Sigmar Polke. Leaf through the collection of illustrated books by Pablo Picasso.

Temporary exhibitions also take place in the museum, providing something new on each visit. Stop for a meal at the Horst Esskultur bar and browse the items for sale in the gift shop.

The site was first opened in 2009 and takes its name from Anette Brandhorst, the great-granddaughter of the founder of the Henkel company. Learn how, when she died of cancer in 1999, her husband donated her art collection to the state for the formation of this museum.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon. You can buy a ticket to enter the museum or get a day pass that includes this and many other museums in the area.

The Museum Brandhorst is in the Maxvorstadt district a little north of the historic center of Munich. Travel by bus to one of the nearby stops or ride the tram to the Pinakotheken station, a short walk from the museum.

Explore the surroundings for other attractions such as the Glyptothek, the New Pinakothek and the Modern Pinakothek.
