Delve into the social and cultural history of the Campinas region at the Museum of Image and Sound (Museu da Imagem e do Som de Campinas). This audiovisual institution provides a showcase of film and video, photography, music and technology artifacts. The Museum of Image and Sound also hosts regular cinema events, debates and educational workshops.
The idea for the museum came from a group of filmmakers and photographers that had a common interest in creating an audiovisual memory of the city. They gathered artifacts once stored away in other city museums and accumulated private collections. The museum’s home is the imposing early 20th-century Palace of the Azulejos (Palácio dos Azulejos), which was the former residence of the Baron of Itatiba.
The museum has one of the city’s most extensive collections of films, negatives, photographs, records, slides and videos. Browse photographs that portray aspects of life in Campinas from the late 1800s to today. The music gallery has examples of gramophones, radios and record players in addition to audio cassettes, compact discs, vinyl records and other recording mediums. Don’t miss the Memorial do Prédio exhibit, which offers an overview of the building and its evolution since its construction in 1878. Check the schedule for the monthly Cinema e Literatura program, which presents cinematic adaptations of literary works. The event begins with a movie screening, followed by a presentation of the author and book. It then closes with an open discussion about the parities and differences between the storyline and characters of the book and movie.
The museum is easy to find in the heart of downtown Campinas. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Campinas is a major nearby landmark. Parking is limited on the streets around the museum.
Admission is to the Museum of Image and Sound is free. Cinema e Literaturaevents take place on the first Saturday of the month and are also free. Check opening times with the museum before you visit.
