Examine the fascinating plants and artistic treasures in this garden and explore the treehouses and slides of the kids’ section.

Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens is a scenic site with exotic vegetation and a vast labyrinth of twirling hedges. The 240-acre (97-hectare) complex contains a rare mélange of plants from this secluded part of the world alongside floral treasures from abroad. Investigate the many sections of the gardens for a glimpse into 13 tropical and unusual plant realms.

Explore the intriguing carnivorous specimens of the Bog House, which has butterworts and pitcher plants, among other interesting plants. Stroll through the dry world of the International Desert Garden, where you will find cacti, aloe and baobabs. The Poinciana Maze is among the highlights of the garden, made up of 2,400 mock-orange plants.

Capture photos of the stunning scenery in the Shower Tree Park and Ka’ula Lagoon. It contains a waterfall, a lagoon and a teahouse of Japanese design. Enjoy the serenity in this garden as you inspect the hibiscus, firecracker flowers and fiddlewood trees.

Bring the kids to the Under the Rainbow Children’s Garden, which has a 16-foot (5-meter) bronze fountain statue depicting Jack and the Beanstalk. Let them wander around the pond and play in and on the treehouse, log cabins, tunnels and slides.

Stroll through the Orchid House Gift Shop for its array of books, jewelry and sculptures. Many of the items are handcrafted by Kauai artisans. Enjoy a picnic in the Wild Forest Garden among the gingers, noni, ylang ylang, vanilla and other trees.

Note that the name of the complex means “Lands by the Sea,” in reference to the gardens’ location on the island.

Book a tour of the gardens in advance to ensure you get a reservation. Visits last from 1 to 5 hours and are available Tuesday through Friday.

Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens is in the northeastern corner of the island of Kauai. Find it just off the main highway east of Kilauea Stream. Visit nearby attractions, such as Waiakalua Beach, Kahili Beach Preserve and Pila’a Beach.
