Featuring the work of traditional, contemporary and progressive local artists, this popular gallery is a creative exploration of life in the Bahamas.

Embark on a discovery of local culture at the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. Admire the exhibits spread over the rooms of Villa Doyle, a beautifully renovated 19th-century mansion and former home of a Chief Justice of the Bahamas. See original pieces that celebrate the country’s artistic heritage and showcase the best of its contemporary art scene.

As you approach Villa Doyle, admire its colonial architecture and lush front gardens. Inside, see works from the National Collection of Bahamian Art as well as revolving exhibits from the gallery’s permanent collection. Admire the diverse range of works, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, ceramics and textiles. The exhibited items illustrate and comment on key aspects of life in the Bahamas and are on display on the ground floor. You can easily spend an hour absorbing the pictures and installations in the well-lit gallery spaces.

To discover works by up-and-coming artists, explore the upper galleries. Enjoy a lively roster of temporary exhibitions featuring contemporary and experimental artistic work. Head to the art library to find books, articles, videos and newspaper clippings about Bahamian art and artists.

One of the gallery’s principle goals is to provide a forum for artists to interact with the public. Choose from a vast program of activities throughout the year, including hands-on workshops, artist lectures, films, demonstrations and activities for children. To find out what’s happening at the gallery during your stay in Nassau, check out the gallery’s website.

If you are impressed by the rich mixture of traditional and progressive work, take some samples home with you. The gift shop on the ground floor sells an assortment of artworks by local artists.

Situated in downtown Nassau, opposite St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas is a 10-15 minute walk or 5-minute taxi ride from Prince George Wharf. The art gallery is open every day except Mondays and public holidays. Admission charges apply with discounts for students and seniors. Children under 12 enter free.
