The New Garden (Neuer Garten) in northern Potsdam is a sprawling 252-acre (102-hectare) parkland dotted with restored 18th-century buildings and English-style gardens. Go for a leisurely stroll around the New Garden’s manicured pathways and admire the heritage buildings. You’ll see the restored Marble Palace, as well as the Orangery, the Schindelhaus, Dutch-style houses and Schloss Cecilienhof.
The parklands were overseen by King Friedrich Wilhelm II, who wished to create a rival to the Baroque beauty of nearby Sanssouci. The Prussian monarch was inspired by his travels in Anhalt-Dessau and began construction on his parklands in the second half of the 18th century.
Make your way to the center of the park to reach the inimitable Marble Palace (Marmorpalais). This exquisite late 18th-century palace has a façade that was designed to resemble the partly buried ruins of a temple. Enter the palace to see its beautifully restored interiors, which are complete with period furnishings and ornately decorated arches.
Nearby, you’ll see the Dutch-style houses constructed from red brick. Continue southward to see the Gothic Library, which is a solemn two-story pavilion that was built to house the king’s book collection.
As you stroll around the gardens, note the pretty fountains and sculpted figures dotted around the lawns. Check out the Orangery, which has a distinctive Egyptian-style façade. The marble obelisk located here depicts the four seasons. The pyramid-shaped icehouse was added in 1791.
One of the New Garden’s more recent additions is Schloss Cecilienhof, which was completed in 1917. This elegant palace was the home of Crown Prince Wilhelm and his wife Cecilie. If you are feeling energetic, climb the hillside of Pfingstberg to reach a spectacular Renaissance-style palace with exceptional views across the city.
Potsdam’s New Garden is located in the northern district of the city. It is open between Tuesday and Sunday year-round. The park is free to visit, however, some buildings may have an admission fee and differing opening hours. The garden is easily reached by bus from Potsdam’s main railway station.
