Quiet rural cabin in Maine near Bigelow Preserve, Flagstaff Lake and Sugarloaf

Highland Hideaway
This quiet, rural retreat is off the beaten path in the Western Maine Woods. One of the few cabins that stay open during the winter months. This little spot is heated and offers a place to cook and sleep for a maximum of 4 guests. Wake up to the sounds of the surrounding streams and forest while enjoying your morning beverage. Come back at the end of your day’s adventures to a warm fire, starry night skies and the peaceful sounds of nature around you.
Popular things to do here: snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking, leaf peeping, mountain/fat biking, bird watching, kayaking, fishing, ice fishing and hunting.
The road runs parallel to scenic Routes 201 (Old Canada Road), and Route 27 (Carrabassett Valley, Sugarloaf Mountain and the West side of Flagstaff Lake). Our road is paved, plowed as necessary and open during the winter months. We are a short distance from East side of Bigelow Preserve, Appalachia Trail, Flagstaff Hut and the East side of Flagstaff Lake. It is a 12-mile drive to the Flagstaff Trailhead. Most of the unpaved roads in the area are only accessible by snowmobile during the winter months. For those familiar with the area, Carriage Road is no longer accessible.
Skiers: the Sugarloaf slopes are a scenic 45-minute drive from this location.
Snowmobilers: There are snowmobile trails nearby, but you will have to check with the local snowmobile clubs for trail access, locations and conditions.
The Hideaway stands alone, off the deck, at the back of our property, with its own yard, campfire ring and driveway with ample parking for your toys. The outdoor grilling and cooking area includes a gas grill, 4 burner gas cook top, large toaster oven, and a large patio cooler. The deck is covered by a metal roof, making cooking outdoors doable in almost all weather conditions. The picnic table is just off the deck. The kitchenette inside has a refrigerator, Keurig and 4 cup coffee makers, microwave, crockpot, toaster oven, dishes, beverage ware, utensils, cooking tools, etc. Bring your food & beverages. We provide bed linens, blankets and towels. The adult size bunk sleeps two people lower bunk, one-person upper bunk, with another twin bunk across the room. There is a multiple device charging port for your devices, WIFI TV, DVD player, movies and an Echo Dot for tunes. The cabin is heated and has an electric fireplace for additional warmth and ambiance. There is a full bathroom with a shower. The “winterized” screen house has seating for 4 and is also a great place to keep gear out of the elements. We provide some firewood for the campfire as long as we have it, and always appreciate when folks bring some Maine firewood with them. We do not offer laundry service, but there are laundromats in both nearby towns. We want you to be comfortable during your stay, so, we cannot stress enough: the cabin and the resources for it truly cannot accommodate more than 4 people. We beg you not to surprise us with a group larger than four.

A little time to myself
All I wanted was to get away and find a little solitude and disconnect from the hustle of life. This place provides a happy medium of alone and the necessity of modern convenience. Most important, it was quiet. Beautifully quiet. I would sit by the fire at dusk and watch the fire while listening to the Coyotes do role call in the distance. Such a relaxing hideaway that I wish I could have stayed there a month. The hosts did not bother my and respected my privacy. Eggs were good as well.

Remote Maine
This is a tiny community in the heart of Maine woods. Expect deer, turkeys, eagles and other wildlife, but do not expect cellphone service or drive throughs! The hosts were lovely, had a generator ready to roll when the weather took out power, and provided with a delightful surprise dinner when we found ourselves staying in more than going out. They were really lovely people and the place, while cozy, has an outstanding screen room and outdoors cooking space.

Escape and Unwind
The perfect location to relax and put your feet up. The little cabin is ideal for a couple or small group. We really enjoyed our stay. The under cover outdoor kitchen is fun to cook in and we played many games of cribbage in the screened in porch. Definitely check out the stream across the street! It was also lovely to sit by the fire in the evening. We will go back for sure!

My husband and I enjoyed this lovely "hideaway" for our 15th anniversary! We had a quiet, private retreat for a day before having our 9 year old son join us the next day. All of us loved the outdoor kitchen/screen house area and hope to some day build something similar at our own home. The outdoor shower was also a big hit for each of us. We didn't use the campfire pit and barely visited the stream during our stay, but would have loved to if we had stayed longer. Inside, the cabin was comfy and cozy for eating, watching DVDs and just enjoying a relaxing time hanging out together. We appreciated the apples, cereal bars & farm fresh eggs that Lois & Paul so kindly provided for our stay. The area was full of nice sightseeing adventures in God's magnificent creation - beautiful views, rivers, streams, lakes, moose, deer, fishing & swimming were all enjoyed. Our son was begging to go back next year as we packed up to leave after an all too short stay! Thank you, Lois & Paul, for a special time, and the late check-out you allowed us! We hope to visit your Highland Hideaway again in the future! 😊💗

The very best stay
Not only was the space perfect, but the owners made it that much better. Across the street there is a creek that is so fun to play in. They have an outdoor cooking area that protects you from weather but is so much fun to cook on. The screen room is for games and the humming birds are so silly to watch. There is a fire pit outside and an abundance of nature. The outdoor shower is relaxing too. The beds are so comfy and you have everything you need inside that place. We will be coming back here, again. & again and again. This place was exactly what I needed to clear my headspace. I’m so glad I did. My kiddos loved it also. They have sheep and chickens. They have wilderness for days and everyone had an absolute blast! Thank you so so much!

Perfect Getaway
Came up to stay here while we went skiing at Sugarloaf mountain and it is a beautiful and cozy cabin. It is very remote and quiet, but still has all the amenities you'll need. Lois and Paul were very accommodating, including leaving us with some delicious oatmeal scotchies cookies upon our arrival. The outdoor kitchen worked excellently to cook a nice, hearty meal after a day on the slopes. Combined with the cleanliness and price, this place can't be beat. We were very happy here and would certainly stay again!

Lois was an incredible host. She made me feel welcomed immediately and made sure the driveway was shoveled and sanded to keep me safe upon arrival. The property itself is adorable! Paul's handmade furniture and built-ins are top-notch, and the cabin is the perfect place to stay during any season. With 4 beds (2 large bunks with plenty of head room), there's space for family or friends, and the bathroom and kitchen were both kept immaculately. Lois and Paul have supplied everything needed in the kitchen area, including plenty of amenities to cook any meal. The bathroom was well stocked and even included shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The surrounding land includes a screened-in outdoor gathering space, a large fire pit, an outdoor shower for the warmer months, and sheep/chickens. The property is beautiful and set close to Flagstaff, Bigelow, and Sugarloaf, so there is no end to the adventures within reach. Lois and Paul also went above and beyond to accommodate my family when our trip took an unexpected turn. They were kind, thoughtful, and incredibly helpful when our trip was thrown into chaos, and we will forever be thankful for their understanding and flexibility. I can't wait to return to this property in the future, and highly recommend it to anyone traveling to the area. You will not be disappointed!
