The Église Notre-Dame-de-Liesse, or Notre-Dame-de-Liesse Church, is one of several beautiful churches in the picturesque old town of Annecy. Come to this Catholic place of worship to attend a Mass, to take a look at its impressive architecture or simply to enjoy some peace and quiet in its sunlit interior.
Records show that the site of this church was a place of religious importance as far back as the 11th century. A church was built here in the 14th century, and the building at one point housed one of the world’s most famous relics of Christ, the Shroud, now known as the Shroud of Turin. Much of the structure you see today was built in the mid 19th century. Visit the ancient bell tower to see the oldest part of the building. This alone dates from as early as the 14th century.
Step inside to explore the lovely interior of the church. Take a seat on one of the pews and enjoy the peacefulness then start exploring the many interesting parts of the church.
The impressive main altar dates from 1855. The Duvernay brothers, two master masons from the Giffre valley, were behind the design. The beautiful sculptures that adorn it were made by the admired Italian sculptor Gilardi. Notice the exquisite details of the statue of the Madonna and Child, which is at the center of the altar. Other statues depict St. Anne and St. Joachim, the parents of Mary.
Look for the beautiful painting of the Virgin Mary with a rosary. It is a copy of a painting by the artist Giovanni Battista Salvi.
