Marvel at the spectacular fresco paintings lining the interior walls of this 16th-century religious treasure that sits on the slope of a mountain.

Novo Hopovo Monastery is one of the largest of 16 medieval monasteries spread across the hillsides of the Fruška Gora Mountains. For its history, beauty and artworks, the site is a national icon. Travel to its scenic grounds and admire the charming yellow façade against a dramatic backdrop of mountainous terrain. Study the red gabled roof and elegant white window frames, which overlook a colorful garden lined with floral arrangements.

Beyond these modern-looking yellow walls is the real treasure, a much older structure of brick and stone. From the outside, notice the pretty curved walls with arched brickwork, topped by a round structure with pillars, a conical roof and a lacy metalwork cross. The monastery is an architectural wonder, seamlessly blending aspects of the Morava style with Islamic and European designs.

Inside, inspect preserved 17th-century frescoes decorating the internal walls and ceiling. Beside the altar, a coffin contains the relics of Theodore of Amasea, a venerated warrior and patron saint of Venice.

Consider the monastery’s rich history. It is thought to have been constructed by the despots (a senior court title) of the House of Branković. Its current incarnation was built in the late 16th century, with other residences and features added in the 1700s. The complex served as a monastic school and was residence to the inventor and writer Dositej Obradovic.

The monastery stands on the southern face of the Fruška Gora Mountains in the southeastern corner of Fruška Gora National Park. Drive northwest from Belgrade for 48 miles (77 kilometers) to arrive in about 1 hour. Walk 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) east to see another smaller, but very beautiful monastery, Staro Hopovo. The monasteries do not have set open hours for visitors. Contact local tour companies to find out how and when you may be able to access the interiors.

While in the area of the Novo Hopovo Monastery, consider visiting the city of Novi Sad, where you can enjoy a leisurely cruise on the Danube River, see the impressive Petrovaradin Fortress and listen to music at the EXIT Festival during early July.
