Obertraun is a quiet village on the banks of beautiful Lake Hallstatt, in an area listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend a few days here and take advantage of all that the surrounding countryside has to offer, including outstanding mountain scenery, natural wonders such as the Dachstein Ice Caves, fascinating history and excellent opportunities for outdoor sports.
Learn about the region by crossing the lake to visit the Hallstatt World Heritage Museum. Enjoy the breeze from the deck of the ferry, or set aside about an hour to follow the beautiful path around the south end of the lake by foot. At the museum, discover around 7,000 years of local history, presented through wonderful interactive exhibits. Find out about the region’s salt-mining past. Leave time to take a guided tour through the atmospheric tunnels of the Hallstatt Salt Mine, believed to be one of the world’s oldest salt mines. Finally, head up to the Hallstatt Skywalk to enjoy panoramic views of the gorgeous mountainous landscape.
In Obertraun itself, see more incredible views by catching the Dachstein Krippenstein Cable Car, which climbs high into the mountains. Exit the cable car and get ready to explore the incredible Dachstein Ice caves, situated high above Obertraun. Join a guided tour to head deep into these underground caves, where striking ice formations are everywhere you turn.
Come to Obertraun in spring or summer to hike and bike around the lush green countryside. Those who love to swim or sail will also find lots to keep them busy at Lake Hallstatt and at the surrounding lakes such as Lake Koppenwinkel and Grundlsee. Obertraun also makes a great destination in the colder months. Go skiing or snowboarding and take wonderful photos of untouched snow-covered mountains.
Fly into Salzburg Airport then drive to Obertraun in around an hour and a half. Take in some incredible views as you go, especially as you draw near this unbelievably picturesque village.
