Ogyeonjeongsa House

In the 16th century a Korean scholar built this house as a teaching center. Today you can spend a night here enjoying peaceful solitude.

A visit to the Ogyeonjeongsa House offers an authentic stay at a traditional Korean hanok house. Experience the tranquil environment of Ogyeonjeongsa House, once revered by students of a respected Confucian scholar. Wake up to views of the Nakdong River and the spectacular natural beauty of the Andong region. Fill up on a typical Korean breakfast and hike to a nearby lookout.

The house is an excellent example of a hanok, which is a style of dwelling that first appeared in Korea during the 14th century. It was built between 1576 and 1586 on the orders of Ryu Seong-ryong, who was the scholar-official and minister of the Joseon Dynasty. The rooms, which blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings, were used by Ryu Seong-ryong as a place to study, write and educate his students. Here, he wrote a personal account of the Imjin War, called Jingbirok.

Each of the hanok buildings are characterized by curving tiled roofs and timber frames. The interiors are simplistic with wooden furniture and futon beds. A 460-year-old tree stands in a courtyard and makes an interesting foreground for views across the river to Andong Hahoe Folk Village. The quiet environment means that the only noise you are likely to hear at night is that of birds singing and leaves rustling in the breeze.

Start your day with a mouthwatering Korean breakfast and then take the opportunity to read a book or simply sit in silence and admire the views.

If you want to stretch your legs, walk to Buyongdae Cliff. This lookout affords a bird’s-eye view of Andong Hahoe Folk Village, the Nakdong River and the Taebaek Mountains. Take the boat to the village and explore the time-honored customs of a 16th-century community.

Ogyeonjeongsa House is open to guests year round and advanced bookings are recommended. The lodge has a website, but it is in Korean only. Get here by catching a boat from the folk village or take a taxi from Andong city center. Drivers can use the on-site car park.
