You may never stand on the winner’s podium at the Olympic Games, but exploring this beautiful museum in Lausanne is the next best thing.

Almost everyone has watched the Olympic Games on television. See them come to life before your eyes at the Olympic Museum. Located on the shores of Lake Geneva in Lausanne, Switzerland, the museum has a magnificent setting.

Start your tour at Olympic World on the third floor. Here, learn about more than 2,200 years of Olympic history. On the second floor, the Olympic Games exhibit displays iconic memorabilia. See Chris Boardman’s pioneering bike from the 1992 games and the iconic golden shoes that brought Carl Lewis his own gold medals in 1984.

In the Olympic Spirit section, immerse yourself in the Games. Test your physical and mental skills in interactive exercises. Peruse the complete collection of Olympic torches and medals.

Replay important Olympic moments in the 3-D theater. Check out the constantly rotating temporary exhibits, which may include displays and films about Olympic history, Olympic heroes and new Olympic sports.

Olympic Park is just outside the museum. Its impeccably landscaped grounds are home to a variety of sculptures relating to the sporting theme. André Ricard’s The Cauldron bears an eternally lit Olympic Flame. Bring a picnic lunch here to enjoy while you are surrounded by the art.

Buy an Olympic-themed souvenir at TOM Shop. Located in the lobby, it is a good place to begin or end your trip to the museum.

Enjoy a glass of wine or a snack in TOM Café. The airy space is located on the top floor of the museum and offers fantastic views of Lake Geneva and the Alps beyond. On weekends, the café features a brunch menu.

From May through mid-October, the museum is open daily. The rest of the year, it is closed on Mondays. It is also closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day. There is an entry fee. Purchase a guided tour package or an audio guide to enhance your visit.

You can easily reach the Olympic Museum by car or public transportation. Use the parking garage located nearby. For a unique trip, travel by boat. In peak season, regular trips are scheduled from Evian, Montreux, Vevey and Villeneuve.
