Exceptional Stay with Thoughtful Hosts!
We had an exceptional stay at this beautiful property on Van Etten Lake! The house was spotless and had all the amenities we needed for a comfortable and relaxing vacation. Jim and Joy, the amazing hosts, truly went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. They even printed out a lovely welcome sign for our family and surprised the kids with homemade cupcakes—such thoughtful touches that made our stay extra special. Our girls had an absolute blast, especially around the fire pit making s’mores and enjoying some Bestie pops. The fishing experience was a perfect way to unwind and enjoy the serene lake. This property is a true gem, and we’re so grateful for the time we spent here. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable getaway and can’t wait to return!

What a gem ❤️
I recently had the pleasure of staying at this charming house with a perfect location overlooking beautiful Van Ettan lake. The view was absolutely stunning, making it an ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee and watching the sunsets. The house itself was exceptionally clean and cozy, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere. Joy and Jim, our hosts, were nothing short of perfect. They went above and beyond to make our stay special, even welcoming us with delicious cupcakes and fresh flowers upon our arrival. I wish we had enough time to visit with Joy and Jim more. Their hospitality truly made our experience memorable. I highly recommend this rental for anyone looking for a relaxing and picturesque getaway.

Wonderful Spot & Hosts
We had a great time at Socrates Place! It was clean, as described, had a kitchen with a lot of pots and pans, and I was very appreciative of the grill and firewood. I'm very sorry that I forgot to message our hosts about disposing of the coals, and re-covering the grill! Location is great as you get to enjoy the smaller lake front and Lake Huron is just a few miles away. We only spoke with Joy, but she was extremely friendly and helpful, and made us feel very welcome. Check in instructions, and process were the best that I've ever had. Would recommend!

Lovely Cottage
This is a cute little cottage on Van Eaten lake in Oscoda, MI. We had a late check-in and the process was easy. Thank you Joy and Jim for making our trip a great experience and very welcoming. They have everything you need and then some. It was very quiet and relaxing and lots to do in the area. We spent a lot of our time fishing at Lake Huron on the pier in Tawas and also fishing at Foote Dam. So many other places to go. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you again!

Relaxing Get-Away
We instantly felt welcomed and right at home, especially when Jim and Joy made a special point of acknowledging our anniversary. The hosts live on the premises, but they are not intrusive. They encouraged us to utilize the property and made themselves available to assist with any need or questions. Parking is very close to the cabin entrance for easy access. We had a private patio to enjoy the view of the lake & the lovely flowers. The towels and linens were very nice, and the kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, cookware, and utensils. There are two dining tables, so my wife had plenty of room to work on crafts projects. They also have a washer/dryer if you need them, as well A/C. We loved watching the ducks, sitting on the pontoon, and building a fire. The amazing Lake Huron beaches are only a 5 min drive and are open to the public. We thoroughly enjoyed Lumberman's Monument dune & trails and Largo Springs. There are quite a few restaurants in Oscoda but be aware that many stores and restaurants aren't open during the middle of the week. It was refreshing not have a long list of check-out tasks, nor threats of fees for every broken rule. Check out was 11am, which makes for a much more pleasant morning than rushing to leave by 10. We will definitely be back!

Socrates Place Review
The property was in an excellent place on Lake VanEtten. The owners were very kind and responded to all questions promptly. We relaxed, read books, completed jigsaw puzzles. It was too windy to go out on the pontoon boat, but we enjoyed all the little towns around Oscoda. We would rent Socrates Place again in a heartbeat.

Family Trip
We had a nice stay. The apartment was clean and had everything we needed. Nice areas to sit outside and the dock worked good for our boat. My boys enjoyed fishing off the dock. Too many weeds for them to swim near the dock, so we made a few trips to the beach in Oscoda. Owners are very nice and welcoming.

Phenomenal Property & Hosts!
We could not have had a better stay or better hosts than Jim and Joy! They made sure to think of everything (free firewood, kayaks, coffee, soft towels, etc.) and included such welcoming little touches like welcome signs and delicious cupcakes! They were super accommodating to every need you could think of while on vacation, even going so far as to lend my husband a fishing lure. This is truly the cleanest place to stay, and we felt so safe and welcomed the entire time. We loved having conversations with them both, drinking coffee by the lake, and even enjoyed an indoor scavenger hunt the one night it rained! We hope to make it back soon and can’t thank them enough for their kindness, hospitality, and beautiful stay!

Trip Down Memory Lane
Very clean with absolutely everything you will need. Jim and Joy were very welcoming, kind and accommodating. The homemade cupcakes were a nice touch! The only reason we would not return is due to my husband's mobility needs which we are learning to cope with. He uses a can and walker, and it was tight inside the cabin for him to maneuver the walker. Many throw rugs which could lead to tripping hazards. The bathroom did not have a lot of room to unload your personal belongings, so we moved aside many decorations on a couple tables outside the bathroom to contain our personal belongings. We made it work, but just something to consider if you have special mobility needs.

A little piece of paradise on Van Etten lake
This was the perfect place to stay as we explored the sunrise coast of Lake Huron. This cottage was extremely clean and had everything we needed, including laundry facilities, private deck for morning coffee, fast wifi, lots of towels in the newly-updated bathroom, a beautiful dock to sit on, and more! Van Etten lake is beautiful and we liked seeing the occasional plane land across the lake at the airport. (This is not a major airport so don’t worry.) Oscoda beach park on Lake Huron is a 10-minute drive away. Thank you Jim & Joy for your hospitality!
