Stroll along one of Britain’s most picturesque beaches and follow the trails into the nature reserve for its diverse landscape.

Sand dunes and a forest decorate the quiet refuge of Oxwich Bay Beach in the outskirts of Swansea. Water sports and sunbathing are among the activities along this picturesque stretch of sand. Hike through the wild region to appreciate its varied terrain of salt marshes, streams and mossy cliffs.

Several magazines have considered this spot among the most beautiful beaches in the country. Capture photos of the impressive sand dunes with a background of green woodland. Climb the surrounding hills for panoramic views of the bay and Bristol Channel.

Although it is a popular spot for families with kids, use caution, as no lifeguard is on duty at Oxwich Bay Beach. Take the family dog on a walk on the sand. Find a spot to sunbathe and set up a picnic. The beach’s secluded setting means it remains uncrowded even on the hottest summer days.

Cool down with a swim in the sea or bring diving gear for an underwater experience. Watch the boats and Jet Skis zooming along the water. Diving, sailing and water skiing are popular sports here. Rent gear from Oxwich Watersports, which has training courses and thrilling activities.

Footpaths lead into the woods, meandering around the trees. Encounter the Church of St. Illtyd and the Sands at Horton. Beyond the sand dunes, make your way to the wetlands of Oxwich Burrows National Nature Reserve. Notice delicate wildflowers growing on the chalky terrain and spot a range of birds and insects.

Buy souvenirs and beach equipment from one of the shops behind the beach. Get refreshments and snacks from several cafés. Oxwich Bay Hotel offers upscale dining with a view of the beach.

The bay is free to visit and remains open year-round. Leave the car at the nearby parking lot and make use of the restroom facilities provided.

Oxwich Bay Beach is a 13-mile (21-kilometer) journey west from Swansea, which should take less than 40 minutes by car. You can also reach the beach by bus.
