For rich cultural and educational experiences explore the collections of the Paesaggio Museum. The collections cover several centuries of artistic endeavors principally by Italian artists who were inspired by the natural scenery in this part of the world. The museum’s name translates into English as the Landscape Museum and one of its aims is to demonstrate how Lake Maggiore has shaped the imaginations and work of numerous artists.
Paesaggio Museum is housed inside the Palazzo Viani-Dugnani. This Baroque palace dates back to the 16th century and hosts a Sculpture section and a Painting section.
Start your visit by studying the sculptures in the rooms of the first floor. These works were created by impressionist sculptor Paolo Troubetzkoy who was born in Intra, a small town on Lake Maggiore. The rest of the museum’s sculpture collection is made up of 22 works by Giulio Branca and 53 by Arturo Martini. All three Italian sculptors were born in the 19th century.
Afterward, wander through the 15 rooms of the Painting section to study ancient frescoes and paintings of the lake and its alpine surroundings. Among the highlights are canvases by mountain painter Federico Ashton and works by 20th-century masters such as Mario Tozzi.

Paesaggio Museum is located in Verbania, on the shores of Lake Maggiore. During the summer season it is open every day except Monday while in the winter it only operates on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. There is an admission charge which is reduced for people aged under 25 and over 70. Free admission applies to people with disabilities, children under the age of 8 and those visiting on their birthdays. If you come by car thee is parking available for a fee in nearby streets.
