Overlooking Plaza Muñoz Gamero is this opulent mansion, a place to imagine the lives of Punta Arenas’ high society residents during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The Palacio Sara Braun is an architectural masterpiece and one of the most instantly recognizable landmarks of Punta Arenas. This magnificent and luxurious mansion dates back to 1895 and was declared a national monument in 1973. Marvel at its European-influenced architecture and peek inside rooms adorned with artwork and period furniture.

For many years the Palacio Sara Braun was the home of Sara Braun, a Russian woman who married the Portuguese entrepreneur and sheep-raising pioneer José Nogueira. Braun commissioned French architect Numa Mayer to construct the mansion using materials brought from Europe. Take a moment to admire the European-style façade, characterized by elegant balconies, portico windows and spires. Notice the winter garden, crowned by a roof made of iron and glass.

Today the mansion is partly a hotel and partly the home of Club de la Unión, a gathering place for businessmen and politicians. Visit some of the rooms and discover original artifacts from the life of Sara Braun and José Nogueira. Imagine a time when the city’s wealthy families lived lives of luxury and extravagance.

Find displays of 19th-century upholstered furniture, which was also shipped from Europe. Spot portraits of Braun and Noguiera, among other impressive paintings. Come to the game room to see an intricately carved billiard table. Look for antique ceramics, liquor bottles and sculptures.

The palace is open daily and has a nominal admission fee. It is on the north side of Plaza Muñoz Gamero, Punta Arenas’ central square. Parking is available at various points around the square and shared taxis also stop here.

While at Palacio Sara Braun, be sure to visit the other historical and architecturally impressive landmarks located around Plaza Muñoz Gamero. These include the Cathedral of Punta Arenas and Casa Braun-Menéndez. Rising out of the heart of the square is the Memorial to Ferdinand Magellan, the first European to sail the Strait of Magellan.
