Pamplona Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María) looms over a cluster of narrow alleys in the northeastern corner of the Old Town. Marvel at the austere yet majestic beauty of its neoclassical exterior, which makes way for a vastly decorated Gothic interior. Constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries, Pamplona Cathedral stands on the grounds of the Roman settlement of Pompaelo. It forms part of a complex that includes a cloister and Diocesan Museum (Museo Diocesano).
Stand in the courtyard and gaze up at the neoclassical façade designed by the Spanish architect Ventura Rodríguez in the 18th century. The main entrance features a huge pediment supported by a row of pillars. On either side are bell towers the south tower houses one of Spain’s biggest bells, called the Campana María. Guided tours to see the bell take place daily on a first-come first served basis.
Religious artwork and artifacts adorn the impeccably preserved interior. In the center of the nave is the black marble mausoleum of Carlos III of Navarre and his wife Leonor de Trastámara. Step into the Gothic cloister, which predates the cathedral and is characterized by hallways with vaulted ceilings. Admire the intricate stonework of its doors and sepulchers. From here you can access the kitchen and refectory. The Diocesan Museum has exhibits of artifacts from churches situated in the Navarre region.
The cathedral is just a 5-minute walk northeast of Plaza del Castillo. Parking is limited in the Old Town, so it’s best to arrive on foot or via public buses.
Pamplona Cathedral is open daily and admission is free. The cloister and museum open from Monday to Saturday and there’s an admission fee. Information about guided tours is available on the cathedral’s official website, which is in Spanish only.
