Panarea is full of beaches, coves and enchanting guesthouses. One of the smallest in the Aeolian Islands archipelago, this stunning islet is considered a romantic getaway. Travel through the little towns and beaches for a glimpse of the culture, history and scenery of the island.
On the southern cape is the pristine Cala Junco cove, where you can admire gorgeous rocky surroundings. Relax on the sandy bay and sunbathe on this hot and dry island. Hike along the jagged coastline and swim in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Visit the adjacent Panarea Prehistoric Village to see vestiges of the 23 huts from a Bronze Age settlement here.
Descend to the Calcara Beach on the northeastern coast for excellent coastal views. Encounter eerie fumaroles and hot springs that remain from what may have been a volcano. The beach is a little north of the Port of Panarea, where most visitors to the island disembark. Pick out your favorite boats in the harbor, which is backed by large, forest-covered mountains.
Embark on a hike along one of the winding, narrow trails running from the port to the charming towns of San Pietro, Drautto and Ditella on the isle’s eastern flank. The western portion of the island consists of a vast nature reserve. Ascend the old mule trail to the Punta del Corvo summit for spectacular views of the park.
Note that many accommodations and establishments across the island are open only in the summer season. Book your stay in advance to be sure of getting a place.
The landmass is part of the Aeolian Islands archipelago off the northeastern coast of Sicily in southwestern Italy. Take a ferry to the island’s port from Milazzo, Messina, Palermo, Naples or Lipari, the largest island in the set. Ride the golf cart taxi service between the port and the towns.
Enjoy the quaint and scenic slice of luxury of Panarea off the Sicilian Coast.
