The Pejepscot Museum is the crown jewel of the Pejepscot Historical Society, a robust and enthusiastic local history society dedicated to the preservation of this area of Maine. Founded in 1888, making it one of the oldest historical societies in Maine, the museum and archives of this organization are a labor of love on the part of its many members. Spend time in their company to get a real understanding of Brunswick and the surrounding area.
The museum hosts two rotating exhibits at a time, which switch over regularly and examine different aspects of life in Brunswick over the ages. They are often designed not only by members of the historical society, but also by students at Bowdoin College who are studying history or museum studies. Past exhibits have ranged from photographic exhibits examining childhood in Brunswick to local arts and crafts to a look at some of the historic dresses and outfits held in the Pejepscot Historical Society Archives. Come to view a time capsule not only of Brunswick, but of much of America as it appeared in the past.
Get inspired to do your own research. The Pejepscot Museum is also home to the historical society’s archives and research library. Enthusiastic volunteers will provide assistance as needed. Look up family history, architecture or businesses or learn more about the history of this beautiful area.
Visit the Pejepscot Museum during any season, as it is open year-round. In the fall and winter, the museum is open from Wednesday to Friday. From May to October it’s open from Tuesday to Saturday. There is no charge for admission, although the Historical Society does accept donations. The museum is located near the Federal Street Historic District, a 6-minute walk from Brunswick Station. There is free street parking available nearby, but this can be difficult to find during peak season, on weekends and during holidays.
