Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Brindisi in Piazza della Vittoria. Although most people are drawn to Brindisi for its seafront promenade or its ancient cathedral, many of its lesser-known attractions offer the most authentic taste of the Italian city. Enjoy the area’s sunny Mediterranean climate from the tree-lined square.
Admire the famous Fontana de Torres. In its early days, the square served as a marketplace (in fact, its earlier name was Piazza del Mercato) and the fountain was crucial for shoppers and vendors. It was built in 1618 by the governor Pedro Aloysio de Torres, who is the fountain’s namesake. Admire its marble basin, which was originally used for christenings. Find the fountain roughly in the middle of Piazza della Vittoria, surrounded by palms.
At the edge of Piazza della Vittoria, spot the small bust honoring the Bersaglieri of the Italian Army. The monument features the sharpshooter in its traditional attire, a distinctive wide brimmed hat adorned with black capercaillie feathers.
Find many of Brindisi’s main attractions within convenient walking distance from Piazza della Vittoria. In less than 15 minutes, stroll to almost any destination in the city, including the Swabian Castle, the Duomo and the Roman Columns. Between sightseeing, stop to enjoy a cappuccino at one of Brindisi’s many charming cafés.
