Piedras Blancas is a mountain resort in the picturesque outback of Patagonia. It is among the world’s most scenic places to ski, with panoramas of snow-covered trees hovering over vast lakes in the white wilderness. Zoom down its slopes of varying difficulty to feel as if you are in the dramatic setting and action of a James Bond movie.
Many of the slopes are ideal for beginner skiers, with lessons and learning groups to join. Make your way up to the top of the mountains via the various chairlifts. Make sure to bring your camera for the photo opportunities from above.
Piedras Blancas prides itself on its range of activities, as skiing is not the only fun action available in the resort. Strap your kids and yourself to a zip line and race down a wire that meanders through snowy forests. Rent a sled and slide down the mountain. Take the resort’s “Snow Safari” option to ride behind a snow plow through the picturesque countryside.
Hike along the many trails that lead off from the main areas. The name of the complex is Spanish for “White Stones,” in reference to the snow during the winter months.
Select from various package deals at reasonable prices depending on the season and activities included. High season is in July and August and low season is in June and September.
The complex claims to be the first site in Argentina to have a ski school, which was run by the German legend of the sport, Otto Meiling.
Piedras Blancas is a 4.5-mile (7.2-kilometer) journey west of the charming city of Bariloche. It should take less than 30 minutes to get there by car or taxi. This mountain is on the way to the scenic peak of Cerro Otto, which is a little farther west from the city. The Central Office, where you can make bookings and find information, is located in the heart of Bariloche.
