Gaze up at the eagles and hawks and go mountain biking on the undulating trails that run through the pine forests.

Pine Ridge National Recreation Area is a large park with campgrounds and a labyrinth of trails running through the forest. Find a great range of plants and animals in this diverse landscape, consisting mostly of pine forests and rocky bluffs. Participate in the large range of activities available throughout the park.

Hike along the trails meandering through the forest of tall and narrow ponderosa pine trees. You can also go on a horseback ride through the dense woodland. Spot some of the wildlife roaming through these scenic grounds, including coyotes, elk and white-tailed deer. Also dwelling in the park are wild turkeys, rabbits and bobcats, among other creatures.

Look skyward to glimpse the majestic eagles and hawks that patrol the upper reaches. Notice the exposed bluffs formed by river erosion that characterize this recreation area. Go mountain biking up and down the picturesque hills of the park. Note that motorized vehicles are not permitted on its trails.

Among the main paths is the Roberts Tract Trailhead, used for hiking or horseback riding. It has picnic tables, restrooms and an accessible rider ramp along its course. Relax at a table with snacks and drinks, as you listen to the soothing sound of the wind rattling the branches of the narrow pine trees.

The park is open and free to the public year-round, with a per-vehicle fee for camping from May through mid-November. Consider staying at one of the motels and lodges in the nearby town of Chadron. The recreation area covers a stunning expanse of 6,600 acres (2,670 hectares).

Pine Ridge National Recreation Area is in its namesake region in the northwestern part of Nebraska. Drive northeast from Denver, Colorado, for 280 miles (450 kilometers) to arrive in 4 or 5 hours. Explore some of the nearby green areas, including the Oglala National Grassland, the Nebraska National Forest and Glendo State Park.
